“Slap Yo Mama”

Yes, I'm Talking About Yo Mama Saha is a fine dining, Arabic fusion restaurant in San Francisco. Everything about the place is classy — the food, the atmosphere, and the service. Yet, Saha has an item on their dessert menu called "Slap Yo Mama" (see photo of the menu on the right). When I asked our server why the dessert was called Slap Yo Mama, she said, "Because after you try it, you'll slap yo mama for never cooking it for you when you were younger."

Hilarious!

We tried it and it was delicious. And anybody who tries it will tell all of his friends about it (just like I'm telling you). It's memorable, catchy, and just the right kind of silly.

Even if you work for the most buttoned-up organization in existence (well, maybe except for the IRS), you can always find some small way to do something a little different -- perhaps even a little silly -- to get people talking about you. Clever things are just so much more memorable than boring ones. Start small and see where it takes you.

Adapt or Die   Those who know me best often hear me proclaim my theory that only old people choose to eat butter pecan ice cream. Oh sure, some younger people enjoy its taste, but nobody under the age of 55 ever goes to the grocery store or Baskin Robins and buys butter pecan ice cream. The flavor is simply outdated. What does this mean for ice cream manufacturers? It means they should keep producing the flavor to satisfy current demand, but they had better create new flavors to adapt to changing tastes. My TEDx Talk: Hey Marketers, Get Your Priorities Straight

18 Minutes of Fame On April 12, 2013, I fulfilled a longtime goal: I gave a TEDx talk. I was honored to be one of six speakers at TEDx UofI Chicago. Everyone at the event was a pleasure to work with. It would be very difficult to add up all of the hours that went into preparing for my short, 18-minute talk. I think I practiced it enough to remember large parts of it for the rest of my life. I tried to bring my passion for the subject to the stage — along with a little humor and a little know-how. There's always room for improvement, but I think I did pretty well. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I must admit that I had so much fun doing the talk that I just may have to try and do another one someday.
